The limestone exterior of the church was quarried on Stony Island. Limestone was carried back and forth by ferry when feasible. In the winter of 1914 and 1915, giant sleds were used to haul the stone. Once the stone reached the island, many parishioners worked at hauling the stones to the site of the new church. Stones were set in place under the direction of Michael Bourdineau, a stonemason from Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada.
The cornerstone of the stone church was sealed with commemorative items. The new stone church was dedicated on August 8, 1915 and named Sacred Heart. The stone church was served by priests from Trenton, Wyandotte, Ecorse and Rockwood.
